Social Media Business Effectiveness: Tips For Engaging Interaction

Woman seems interested and thinking it over
We’re all in business for a reason. Some may have a mission, some may have sales goals, but the one thing we all need is interested people. Without people discovering us and if they need our products and services and then sharing our capabilities with others, our businesses wouldn’t succeed.

One of the most fascinating advancements to help businesses has been social media because it makes it so easy now for anyone including your friends to follow and share your pages, blog posts, videos and tweets.

The true problem today is… is anyone actually seeing what you’re writing?

“Social” Media is exactly that, social. If no one is engaged in the discussion by commenting or sharing your information with others, there’s nothing “social” about it. Then you are just talking into the wind.

We also have the added problem of an overload of community websites, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, FourSquare, InterNations, and the list continues.

So here are a few tips that I guarantee will help engage more people. When there are more responses, there’s more interest, and more interest leads to more clients and customers.

1- From today onward when you add a post to Facebook, I want you to tag 1-2 people who you think will want to discuss your topic. Without tagging, no one may see the post, and by actually tagging, you are asking those people to comment. This is how Facebook becomes social instead of a list of random thoughts. In addition when you tag others, your post appears on those people’s walls as well as your own and this gives you an even bigger chance of engagement. (To tag someone, you must of course either be friends, or have liked their fan/company/cause page. Just type @ (and then the name.)

2- When it comes to Twitter, the true way people discover your tweets are through searches. The #hashtag is a great way for your posts to come up in those searches. So before you send out the next tweet, do a search on a few hashtags, find the ones that will help others find you, and see who is using them (to connect) and be sure to include different ones or the same one in every post. For example: some of the tags I use in different tweets are, #brand #branding #creative #socialmedia #entrepreneur #startups #biz #art #artists and for my environmental cause I might use, #ecofriendly #eco #green #frogs #amphibians. You get the idea.

I also highly recommend buying and downloading “TweetAdder”, once set up (and I have a tutorial video on this) it’ll really help you find others and them find you. Plus, you’ll have the added bonus of all the functionality it can do, saving you lots of time.

3- If you have a blog, I recommend adding the “Tweet Old Posts” plugin. Once set up, it will breathe new life into all the posts on your blog, sending out tweets directing people to them. Also install “Kstats Reloaded”, and it will give great stats on your blog visitors and interaction in Social Media. (Extensive WordPress series of posts with Tips and Videos!)

4- If you are ignoring LinkedIn, wake up! This social media “business” community is the largest of it’s kind for entrepreneurs and professionals of all industries. There are so many amazing ways to reach thousands of people easily. Not only can you search by company, company type and job titles but the “groups” section is one of the most powerful areas. You can search the groups for say “social media” and it will show all the groups and how many members each has. So let’s say you join a group and it has 100,000 members. You can start a discussion and it will be posted in the group, but will also be emailed to all or most (depending on their settings) members. The potential for how many targeted, like-minded individuals you can reach in one post in unreal. Watch this video tutorial on the groups section, and join a group today.

5- FourSquare? Okay not too many people that I know are yet into this one, but it sure is a nice idea to help out your local businesses. When you recommend a shop or bakery and give a shout out, what better way to have them know you and remember you as well as do a nice thing for them.

So remember “social” media is just that, social. Without the interaction, it’s not going to work at all.

Brand Interview – Shasta Nelson, GirlFriend Circles

Shasta Nelson - GirlFriend Circles

How long has your company been in business? Please tell us a bit about your company, its mission, goals…
GirlFriendCircles.com was launched in late 2008 in response to repeated statements I heard from my life coaching clients along the lines of “It’s harder to meet platonic girlfriends than it is to date!” and “I know there have to be other women who are ______ (fill in the blank: new to the area, just gone through a divorce, just had their kids move out) and value new friends, but how do I find them?” In trying to sleep one night, I started brainstorming about how I could play friendship matchmaker for a few of my awesome clients in other cities… the next morning I had a business idea that I felt compelled to follow through.  GirlFriendCircles.com is now the only online community that matches new friends offline by connecting circles of women in local cafes and wine bars in 35 cities in the U.S.  Everything is done in small groups and designed around meaningful sharing, to get to know other local women who are open to new friendships.  Not surprisingly, research now shows that women are replacing half their friends every 7 years—a woman looking for new friends is not alone in that search.

Do you donate to charities? Tell us about that also and why.
Yes.  I tithe (10%) of my personal income to non-profits.  And on a business level, I recently came up with what I think is a creative idea to help support charities and to back up the values of GirlFriendCircles.com.  Now, if a woman commits to attending a ConnectingCircle and pulls a no-show—she will make a $5 donation to our “Show Up or Save the World” pot and every quarter we donate that to a new charity. Some women whine about it—but I personally love it.  I love that we redeem something inconvenient (whatever reason we have for not attending our commitment) with something helpful and meaningful.

How did you know what typeface (font) would be right for your company wordmark or logo? If your logo has an illustration, describe why that art was the right thing, animal, place, object, etc…
I trusted my designer, Rachel Orrison, to only give me options that she felt matched my values and feelings—and then I went with my gut. It’s trying to find a mood… a feeling… something fun, and yet professional.  Something feminine, and yet not too sappy. I chose the concept of circles over the images of women in order to keep it clean, inclusive and iconic.

How did you decide on the right color palette to fit your company look and feel?
Well I knew I wanted brown as a warm and basic color.  At first I didn’t want any pink, but ended up finding a hot shade I liked, since, like or not, pink does still help specify the gender I want to attract.  But it was important to me to stick some other fun colors in there too, so a little green and orange rounded it out nicely.  I avoided pastels, and went bold.  It felt fun, courageous, and friendly to me.

How did you decide which type of designer to work with, or did you design your own identity and web presence?
I feel super lucky in that I asked several friends for referrals and loved Rachel’s design work.  I initially figured I’d hire her for a one-time set up of the logo, but ended up loving her so much that she’s my go-to designer and is now working on my upcoming re-design of my web site.

In what order did you present your company to the world? Did you start with marketing and products, or website, blog and social media?
Website.  I didn’t even do business cards for almost a year.  And social media didn’t really become important to me until last summer.  My, how times change, huh?  Now it’s a pretty huge part of my online presence.  It’s really my social media, blogs and interviews that create my “brand” more than anything tangible ever could.

GirlFriend Circles website screenshot

Did you do research or study any software, take webinars, teleclasses, before approaching any area of your marketing or web presence?
I did learn a lot from Inc. magazine and startupnation.com in walking through their “how to create a marketing plan” section which helped me become more intentional and strategic.

Do you advertise locally in newspapers and/or nationally in magazines? Are they effective?
I chose the P.R. route over the Advertising route.  I have been mentioned or interviewed for several national magazines such as Parents, Essence, More, and Redbook.  And yes, it’s super effective as that adds a level of safety and credibility to my audience who are not used to looking online for friends.

Do you advertise online using Google, Facebook or on other company sites? Are they effective?
Google advertising has been effective—I love how specific I can be.  Facebook hasn’t been… but that may be because people feel less need for making new friends when they’re online with friends.  Of course, nothing replaces local, face-to-face friendships, but it does go to show that it’s not only finding your target audience, but finding them at the right time!

When you printed your products, packaging, business cards and other print marketing did you choose an online printer or visit a local vendor?
I went online. And cheap.  I just rarely use printed stuff so it’s not worth it to me to spend a ton on business cards.

Did you know anything about different types of papers, when you wanted to print your marketing materials?
Nope. Just went with recycled for the value.

Have you ever used “green” technology in printing, using FSC certified papers or recycled paper and if not, how likely are you at trying this on a next project?
Yep… and happy with it!

If you sell products, are they produced in the U.S.A. or abroad?
N/A

Is there anything you haven’t yet tackled, but will want to do soon?
Oh yes!  The list is long!  I want to redesign my homepage, pitch a book proposal to an agent, organize an overseas travel trip for girlfriends, and start video-logging!

Defy Gravity: Drop Your Bounce!

Blog – 8 months ago = low on visitors and readership, bounce rate 65%

Blog – today = high on readership, visitors have quintupled and the bounce rate is now below 1%

How did I do it?

Bounce Rate chart Google Analytics

It all started about 8 months ago. So many people would contact me and ask me questions about software, social media, websites, email issues and more. In addition, I was building a lot of WordPress and Concrete5 theme websites. Each new client would need a tutorial to understand how to work their new site, so I realized if I could create screencast video tutorials, they could be widely used over and over and I wouldn’t need to teach them individually anymore.

So I created blog posts, explained in the post as well as in the video how to do something, like brand your YouTube channel, how to use TweetAdder, or a 10 video series on WordPress blogs, setting, plugins, advanced features. I also would SEO tag all these posts just right so anyone looking for those instructions would land right on that page.

As I continued to create these posts and videos I saw my readership was going up, they were staying longer, reading more pages and my bounce rate going down.

Then in May, I attended Savor the Success‘s Rock The World NYC 2-day conference and thought, there are so many women in the room and most had great successful brands, so was there a way I could help them and they could help me?

Brand Interviews was Born

I created the new section on my blog, Brand Interviews and wrote to many of these women as well as many other artists, photographers, designers and other entrepreneurs and asked them if they’d like to be featured and get some free PR? Well, that worked out to be very successful and there are now about 22 interviews so far and each week I publish another.

Why were these interviews working? Because first, most people like to tell their story, second, others love to read brand success stories and learn tips, and third, because I know just how to present them in their best light as well as SEO tag the page to draw traffic to them. In addition, each new interview draws different crowds depending on who that person is connected to. So they come to read that interview and then go look at who the other interviews are with and maybe read another two.

In addition, social media became a terrific advantage so that each interview could be shared with both followers of the interviewee and my own and it continues to spread.

Branding Wars

Last week I started another section, I will compare two companies against each other, but these will only be companies I have used and are familiar with, so I can really tell my own take on them. The first was Apple vs Dell. Next up might be the Yogurt war.

Conclusion and Tips

We always hear “content is king,” well this blog story turn around, proves it.

Make sure when you’re posting on Facebook and Twitter you are using a link that goes directly to the post or page, not just to your homepage. If they land in the middle of your site, they may look around. If they’re just reading the post right on your homepage, they may read and leave.

If you belong to any social media sharing sites like the Social Buzz Club, they can help your reach and visibility on the web.

If there are links on your homepage, to press or YouTube videos, and they are sending people away, change the links so they go to another page on your own site, your press page or media page.

Study the content stats on Google Analytics, what’s most important there is seeing which posts are read more than others, how long they stay on a particular page. For example: If a post has a great photo in it, and the average time on that page is 15 seconds, you know they came to see the photo and didn’t read anything. If you have a video loaded and it’s 3 minutes, and the average time is 4 minutes, you know they read and watched. By reviewing this you know what people want more of.

Make sure that your content is helpful, that will always attract more fans.

I started the company in 2007 and it has been going strong ever since. I am a sole proprietor and offer graphic design services to clients around the world, which includes web design, identity design, branding, logo design, etc. My mission is to solve business problems through strategy & design, not just decorate.

Do you donate to charities? Tell us about that also and why.
Yes, I donate every year and have so far donated about $20,000 via a number of fundraisers held through my blog. The reason is simply because I am in the position to help others and what goes around, comes around.

Philanthropy
Here is a sample of my philanthropic efforts over the past few years.

Raised USD$3607 for the 2011 Eastern Australian Flood Victims via an online fund raiser.

How did you know what typeface (font) would be right for your company wordmark or logo? If your logo has an illustration, describe why that art was the right thing, animal, place, object, etc…
The typeface used in my logo design is understated, simple but with character, suited perfectly for the name “Just Creative Design.” If you look closely you will also see that the logo features a pencil made out of the initials JCD. I actually wrote an article on the process of choosing the name & creating the whole identity.

Did you do research or study any software, take webinars, teleclasses, before approaching any area of your marketing or web presence?
No, but I wish I did. I learned the hard way, experimenting myself and making mistakes.

Do you advertise locally in newspapers and/or nationally in magazines? Are they effective?
No, but I have been featured in numerous papers & magazines. They brought in a short burst of enquiries, but nothing steady like Google.

Vero logo by just creative design

Do you advertise online using Google, Facebook or on other company sites? Are they effective?
All of my referrals from search engines are organic and that’s how I get the vast majority of my clients. Having good SEO is highly effective & recommended.

When you printed your products, packaging, business cards and other print marketing did you choose an online printer or visit a local vendor?
I had a printer contact me to try their services. I ordered some cards from them and I am still using that batch today!

Did you know anything about different types of papers, when you wanted to print your marketing materials?
Yes, but there was a limited option from this vendor which made it easy.

Have you ever used “green” technology in printing, using FSC certified papers or recycled paper and if not, how likely are you at trying this on a next project?
Yes, I have for some client projects. I make it my business to educate my clients about these types of papers, even if it is an added expense.

If you sell products, are they produced in the USA or abroad?
N/A

Is there anything you haven’t yet tackled, but will want to do soon?
See more of the world!

Ever wonder why when you go to comment on someone’s great blog post some comments have pictures next to them and others don’t?

gravatar pictures that accompany comments

Well, that’s a Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatars) and it’s a great way to show your visibility on the web. Once set up, it’s tied to a particular email account, and then whenever you wish to leave a comment, from the New York Times to Mashable, your photo will be there. It will also be tied to your own blog if it’s the same email account that’s the administrator, so be careful that you use the right logo or photo with the right email. For example: I have one Gravatar for Branding YOU Better and a separate one for Frogs Are Green.

It’s so simple to register, just follow this easy video screencast tutorial and watch how your Gravatar follows you from site to site:

Brand Interview – Sandra Swieder, Photographer, From Across the River

Sandra Swieder

How long has your company been in business? Please tell us a bit about your company, its mission, goals…
I have a photography business. I photograph mainly people, real people. Politicians, actors, artists. My goal is to shoot editorial portraits and corporate events. I’d love to be able to shoot children’s fashion. I love running around photographing kids.

I started freelancing in 1991 as a photo assistant. I worked commercially in NYC for 14 years as an assistant and also worked as a prop and set stylist. In 2005, I kind of went on my own and took a break from the commercial industry. (I then started a family, moved out of the country to Mexico and now I am back and restarting my business and this project is my launch. I am also a single mom.)

I am in the process of producing a 9/11 photography exhibit in honor of the 10 year anniversary of September 11, 2001. The exhibit, “From Across the River” focuses on the New Jersey perspective. I focused on the ever changing skyline and waterfront operations that became the life line to ground zero. I focused on the unity. New Jersey lost almost 700 citizens and Hoboken bears the largest loss of life. New Jersey may be a separate state, but we were not a separate community.

I spent a year photographing the waterfront. I established relationships with key emergency personnel who ran the waterfront operations and collected their stories.  I am also producing a mini documentary to go along with the photo exhibit so people can hear first hand accounts of what happened along the Hudson River that Tuesday morning and the days, weeks and months that followed.

My goal is for the exhibit to travel around the state. I hope schools will want to visit the exhibit. My images focus on the positive. There are no distraught images.  I held a black box in front of my face and focused on the beauty as the world felt like it was falling down around us.  The sun rose and the sun set the next day and people came together. My project is historic documentation, educational and fine art.

Being a mother, my young child is growing up with these images. I am very cautious as to how this historic event effects the future generation and how the events can be told. I know for many of us, we can’t believe it has been 10 years.

Right now I am in the fundraising stage and trying to get the word out. I am self-producing this project.

Do you donate to charities? Tell us about that also and why.
I’ve done a lot of work for charities. I believe we need to give back. I’ve worked with a lot of local issues too in supporting them. The Reservoir 3, The Loews Theater, Hudson Cradle and Camp Liberty are some of the organizations I’ve donated services to.

My project “From Across the River” will be contributing a portion of sales to a local charity related to 9/11.

from across the river by sandra swieder

How did you know what typeface (font) would be right for your company wordmark or logo? If your logo has an illustration, describe why that art was the right thing, animal, place, object, etc…
I kept my name/logo simple. I let my images speak for themselves. I want people to not be distracted by fonts and logos. I want them to get the feeling from my images.

How did you decide on the right color palette to fit your company look and feel?
For my personal site and logo, I went with gray. It is the color photography uses to balance light. For the exhibit we kept it similar and simple but used black.

How did you decide which type of designer to work with, or did you design your own identity and web presence?
I did my own design for my personal website and promotional materials.  I am working with a designer, Sandi Grom for the project. We are still keeping a simple look.

In what order did you present your company to the world? Did you start with marketing and products, or website, blog and social media?
I have a website, and profiles on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google. I spent hours one night connecting all the dots of social media. I’m all linked up. I am out there, and just need to be found and promoted.

How long after the launch of your company did you start pitching in social media?
I tried to pitch as soon as launched. I launched my website this past January.

Did you do research or study any software, take webinars, teleclasses, before approaching any area of your marketing or web presence?
I research all the time. Knowledge is power. I also signed up with Agency Access and they are linked to PhotoShelter. They offer great advise, webinars, information. I did a lot of research on marketing. I realized you need to spend about 60-70% on marketing, then working on the fun stuff. It is a process; emails, promos, follow-up phone calls, social media. But until I launch “From Across the River,” all my focus is on the exhibit and getting that word out to the public.

Do you advertise locally in newspapers and/or nationally in magazines? Are they effective?
I am starting to advertise for the exhibit locally. I send out mailings to magazines about every month. It takes a few times before you are noticed.

Do you advertise online using Google, Facebook or on other company sites? Are they effective?
I am on all social media sites. Sometimes they are effective. I am on some industry related sites too for the past few years now and I get some jobs from them. I actually posted a job and got my video editor Staccato Media Group from advertising on Mandy.com.

When you printed your products, packaging, business cards and other print marketing did you choose an online printer or visit a local vendor?
Both. I use a little of both. For my personal work, I always try to use local vendors or reliable vendors I have worked with. I have been lucky with the 9/11 Project.  The last printer, Royal Printing printed over 7,000 postcards for free.

WTC 2001 view from the Jersey Side by Sandra Swieder

Did you know anything about different types of papers, when you wanted to print your marketing materials?
Yes, but it is all about the costs. What we like and can afford to produce. Working in the photo industry, I am exposed to a lot of papers and presentation supplies. I love good paper, and I actually collect paper.

Have you ever used “green” technology in printing, using FSC certified papers or recycled paper and if not, how likely are you at trying this on a next project?
I’d love to be more green. Actually living in Mexico, I learned to recycle more and live greener. They are doing better then us in that department.  I definitely think we should all be green friendly in all areas of the work we produce.

If you sell products, are they produced in the U.S.A. or abroad?
I produce all my work locally, between N.J. and N.Y.C.

Is there anything you haven’t yet tackled, but will want to do soon?
Launching “From Across the River.” It’s been challenge self producing this body of work. I know people think if it’s about 9/11, the funding must be easy. It’s like any other project, it takes time, recognition and dedication.

“From Across the River”

will be opening September 1st at Art House Productions
