“The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!” are a working band. Since their inception in late 2012 they’ve been plenty busy. In 2013 they played over 50 shows, a nice number considering that Gary Van Miert (acoustic guitar & vocals) and Malcolm Marsden (electric guitar) both have full time jobs.
“The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!” are the brainchild of Gary Van Miert, who has been playing and singing old Country and Blues songs for years, more or less as a hobby. He cobbled together the duo’s name from the names of different groups from his extensive collection of Gospel 45’s. Gary recorded a cd with guitarist and old college buddy Rudy Moni as a lark, but soon got the fire in his belly to take this music out to the clubs for a test drive. Since Rudi didn’t have the desire to go slogging around the dive bar circuit, Gary went out on his own, meeting Malcolm at an open mike in Jersey City. The two found that they shared a passion for American Roots Music and began a musical partnership that took them from the open mikes in Jersey to the clubs of Manhattan and Brooklyn and beyond. Not only do they continue to play traditional venues, but do many other non-traditional gigs as well, such as a vintage car show, a historical cemetery and even a chili cook off. Their influences include many seminal figures in American music, such as Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Reverend Charlie Jackson, Wilbert Harrison, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Brother Joe May, Charlie Feathers, Carl Perkins, Smiley Lewis, and Lloyd Price.
“The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!” are a unique entity in the NY/NJ music scene. They consider themselves the only guitar/vocal duo that mixes equal parts Rockabilly, Country and genuine guitar Gospel music with a spoonful of greasy Blues to wash it all down. Bon appetit!
