Mayor Steven Fulop will give the opening remarks and the event will be kicked off by the regionally well known, Dominoes of St. Dominic Academy. Food and drinks will be served during session breaks. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

The TEDx Jersey City Team:

Alicia Ruth
Born and raised just outside of Chicago, Illinois… Alicia always wanted to wander all over the world. So far she’s lived in Miami and New York City and intends to keep that list growing. She fell in love with the stars after her first trip to the planetarium as a child and has been fascinated and passionate about science, particularly space exploration, physics and astrobiology ever since. She is a visual artist, writer and passionate animals and human rights advocate. She is a believer in kindness, compassion and a total capsaisin junkie.

Anne McTernan
A proud Jersey native and eight year resident of Jersey City, Anne has been professionally, artistically, and socially active in the downtown community since 2005. Currently she is the Associate Director of Jersey City Art School, Founder of Art Activates, and Co-Founder of TEDx Jersey City.  Anne practices architectural and interior design under the moniker Anne Mac Design.  Her commitment to sustainability and renewing the urban landscapes of Jersey City is most notably observed through her efforts in the development of the Jersey City Art School, the Bright Street Community Garden, and Bike JC.

Caley Vickerman
Caley Vickerman loves stories.  Hearing them, and telling them.  She thinks that every place and every person has a story (at least one) that they desperately want to share with others.  Jersey City is a place rich-in-stories and TED is a unique and awesome forum in which to tell them.  It seems only fitting that they be brought together to everyone’s benefit.  She is obsessed with haiku as a story-telling tool

Ceallaigh Pender
Ceallaigh is heavily involved in the small business and arts culture scene in Jersey City. Originally from Santa Cruz , CA, Ceallaigh went on to study art and massage all over the world and then eventually settled in Jersey City, NJ. She founded Evolve Revolution, a therapeutic massage practice which focuses on chronic pain management, injury prevention and rehabilitation, therapeutic touch and also personal health and wellness education. In addition to her passion for massage therapy she is also an artist and teacher of ceramics at The Jersey City Art School, a cellist in multiple singer songwriter bands.

As a Midwestern transplant in the New York City area, Yvonne Vairma has adopted Jersey City as her home on the East Coast. After relocating from Brooklyn to the western bank of the Hudson River in 2009, this small-town Minnesota native found a vibrant and inspiring community of local businesses, artists, and organizers that became her most beloved neighborhood to live in while working in New York.

Yvonne Vairma
Yvonne’s involvement with TEDx Jersey City grew out of her love for the area, and years of volunteerism in local organizations such as 4th Street Arts and The Jersey City Art School. As a writer and filmmaker, Yvonne believes strongly in the role of storytellers, communicators, and “idea-spreaders” in the health of communities. She is thrilled to help create a platform for Jersey City’s pool of talent to find an audience at TEDx Jersey City.
