Should BP change their flowery logo now?
Since this website is about branding, I thought it was time to talk about BP’s identity.
It looks like they changed their logo from the shield to the sunflower logo in 2000, hoping the world would see them as a greener company. It’s certainly a stretch to think of an oil company as green.
The original classic “shield logo.” & the updated BP “shield logo.”1979-2000
The new BP “sunflower pattern” logo. 2000-?
Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf region, and the failures on their part to stop it, or to even have a plan in place for… what if?… they’ve showed the world just how “green” they aren’t.
I, like many other designers have been busy designing t-shirts, and blogging about this, but seeing their logo everywhere covered in oil, I’m wondering if it’s time for them to rethink their identity.
In looking on the web today, I noticed a link to a logo blog for UK’s Greenpeace who has started a campaign to redesign BP’s logo. There are already a ton of entries. I may have to upload a few ideas of my own, you can be sure they won’t be green.
