Branding Wars: Yankees vs Red Sox, Still the Same Old Rivalry?

Last night I settled onto the couch for some of the best baseball there is, Yankees vs Red Sox. As the Red Sox players took the field, I didn’t recognize many names and thought to myself, how can I boo these guys when I don’t even know who they are or seen them play? Of course, it’s the team, the uniform or is it the individual players? David Ortiz and pitcher, Josh Beckett were the only recognizable players last night and I was so used to seeing some of the other players like, Pedrioia, Ellsbury, and Crawford, but they’re on the DL. And where’s Youkilis, on another team now, as is Johnny Damon.

So, does it matter at all who’s playing? Is it just the brand, the attitude, the town, the uniform and what that all represents? I’ve been a Yankee fan for so long, watching a new set of Red Sox players was a bit different for me. I had no past reference in mind of previous games and those player’s actions.

But as the game went along the two teams were on a great seesaw and the rivalry was clearly about the game itself. Anything you can do, we can do better. Game one, Yankees! It’s almost time for game two this afternoon in this intense heat and I can’t wait to see what happens.

Go Yankees!
